Uruguay embraces mining

“He is an idiot who, having riches, does not try to multiply those riches.” With these words Uruguay’s President José Mujica defended the government’s efforts to win congressional approval to allow open-pit mining in the country. Both the lower chamber and the senate, where the ruling Frente Amplio (FA) has a narrow majority, approved a bill outlining tax and environmental terms to mine the country’s largely untapped reserves this week.
