BRAZIL: Congress plays for time again

Across Brazil, city governments are preparing for a further round of major protests to coincide with Independence Day celebrations on 7 September. The size of the protests may depend on the public’s interpretation of congress’ latest proposal to end the practice of secret voting. While many Brazilians have welcomed the move, some sections of the press believe that the latest constitutional amendment (PEC) has less to do with an outbreak of morality in congress and and more to do with a desire to further delay punishment for politicians convicted of criminal offences.
