ARGENTINA: Despite victory in Bariloche, Fernández still in a spin

A surprising amount of political commentary in Argentina is generated by President Cristina Fernández’s Twitter account. Whereas most users believe brevity is the key to the social network that restricts each post to 140 characters, Fernández merely uses the word limit as line breaks in her lengthy diatribes. Over the weekend, she used her account to attack Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera over his personal interests in the LAN airline (currently engaged in a dispute with the state-owned Aerolíneas Argentinas); this week, she used the site to welcome simultaneously her party’s mayoral victory in the city of Bariloche and to warn of a “red circle” intent on destabilising her government.
