COLOMBIA: Santos’ re-election bid up in smoke

All the talk about whether the peace process with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) in Havana will be concluded by the end of 2013 in time for President Juan Manuel Santos to seek re-election next May could soon be irrelevant. Santos has been caught off guard by a rural strike which has spread like wildfire to half of Colombia’s 32 departments, and several other sectors, since it began on 19 August. His government’s improvised efforts to contain it have led to such a precipitate fall in his popularity that re-election suddenly looks a distant prospect.
