German prisoner dies. On 17 September Colombia’s national penitentiary institute (Inpec) reported that German national, Wilhelma Katharina Krederlbach Geb Jansen, died in a Santa Marta hospital from a chronic pulmonary disease. Krederlbach, a Santa Marta (Magdalena department) resident for the past 25 years, was arrested and charged with illicit association to commit homicide for her presumed involvement in the murder of a man that she believed had stolen her jewellery. The authorities believe that after her Santa Marta home was burgled, in November 2012 Krederlbach contacted members of the Los Urabeños criminal gang and contracted them to locate and punish the perpetrators. Days later the Urabeños murdered a man believed to be responsible for the burglary. The Urabeños were arrested by the police for the murder and confessed that they had been hired by Krederlbach and she was arrested last July. An Inpec statement said that Krederlbach had “been suffering from respiratory problems” and as a result the local prosecutor had requested for her to be placed under house arrest. However, the attorney general’s office opposed this request which was subsequently rejected by a local judge. Inpec adds that as her health deteriorated Krederlbach was transferred to the nearby hospital on 3 September, where “she died in the intensive care unit on 12 September”.
