Paraguay joins regional “space race”

Paraguay’s senate approved the creation of an aerospace agency (Agencia Espacial del Paraguay [AEP]) last week. The military high command pushed for the AEP, arguing that Paraguay needed its own satellite to reduce dependence on foreign technology. It was almost certainly reacting to the decision by its ‘old foe’ Bolivia to commission China to build a satellite, ‘Túpac Katari 1’, which is due to be blasted into orbit on 20 December from the Gobi desert.
