Crunch time for Santos

November was always going to be a decisive month for President Juan Manuel Santos. On 20 November he finally declared his candidacy for the May 2014 presidential election, declaring that he wanted to finish the peace process with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc). While November got off to an unexpectedly positive start in the Havana talks, with substantial progress made on the issue of the Farc’s future political participation, the discovery of alleged Farc plots to assassinate prominent Colombian politicians was a setback.
