In Brief – Chile

ECONOMY | Public sector workers end strike. Today (2 December), thousands of Chilean public sector workers will return to work after the umbrella Mesa del Sector Público reached a deal on 29 November with the government led by President Sebastián Piñera. Unions have been striking on and off since August in demand of an 8.8% salary increase. The final deal provides for a 5% increase in addition to other agreed benefits including a C$200,000 (US$376) one-off bond for workers earning less than C$663,500 (US$1,249) a month. The deal has not been universally accepted; one of the 14 unions, Federación Nacional de los Profesionales Universitarios de los Servicios de Salud (Fenpruss) has rejected it, while other unions not included in the Mesa, like the Federación Nacional del Ministerio Público (Fenamip) have pledged to remain on the picket lines.
