It is no coincidence that President Nicolas Maduro has been tweeting successive pictures of his late predecessor Hugo Chávez (1999-2013) in the run-up to Sunday’s municipal elections, which the government has officially named ‘the day of loyalty and love for the supreme commander Hugo Chávez and the homeland’. In other words, come out and vote in memory of Chávez because, despite his recent populist moves to deliver an early Christmas for consumers, Maduro on his own isn't convincing. He was only barely elected in April, when millions of Chavistas turned out to do the comandante’s final bidding, which was to elect his anointed heir.
