BOLIVIA–PARAGUAY: Turning a chapter
“One of my happiest days” is how Paraguay’s President Horacio Cartes reportedly described his recent visit to La Paz where he met his Bolivian peer Evo Morales and announced the re-launch of diplomatic relations. These were severed in June 2012 following the impeachment of Paraguay’s former president Fernando Lugo (2008-2012), which Bolivia, along with fellow members of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), held to be a break in the democratic order. The re-launch of relations is also considered crucial to wider regional integration efforts.
