BRAZIL: World Cup count-down begins

With 3,000 security officers protecting 5,000 ex-footballers, Fifa officials, politicians, businessmen and journalists, the World Cup draw on 6 December passed, perhaps unsurprisingly, smoothly enough. To ensure the absence of any possible calamity, like the partial collapse of the stadium due to host the opening match of the competition, the event was held in Costa do Sauípe, 80kms outside the nearest big city, Salvador. But the final matches of the Brazilian domestic football season on 8 December also gained widespread media attention, when clashes broke out between fans in the southern city of Joinville, leading some to wonder whether hooliganism will be an issue at the World Cup.
