Uruguay takes final step to legalise marijuana

Uruguay’s senate approved a bill legalising the cultivation, sale and consumption of marijuana under the control of the State on 10 December. The ruling Frente Amplio (FA) used its majority in the senate to approve the law by 16 votes to 13 after a 13-hour debate and thus follow the lead of the lower chamber of congress in its July vote. President José Mujica will now complete the formality of promulgating the new law.
