GUATEMALA: Colom accused of murder

President Alvaro Colom is facing his toughest challenge yet since taking office in January 2008. Allegations by a murdered lawyer made in a posthumously released video accuse Colom and members of his inner circle (including his wife, Sandra Torres de Colom, and the directors of one of Guatemala's leading banks, Banco de Desarrollo Rural) of orchestrating his death and that of his client, businessman Khalil Musa and Musa's daughter. Colom strenuously denies the allegations, claiming he is the victim of yet another attempt at destabilising his government. The real test for him and his government will be whether the investigation into the allegations yields results, not least given the notorious weakness of Guatemala's institutions.
