In Brief - El Salvador, Dominican Republic

POLITICS | Arena loses another appeal. On 21 March El Salvador’s supreme electoral court (TSE) rejected a motion presented by the right-wing opposition Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) to annul the 9 March presidential run-off. This is the latest legal appeal by the opposition party, whose candidate Norman Quijano lost the run-off to Salvador Sánchez Cerén of the ruling left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) by a whisker (50.11%-49.89%). Sánchez Cerén was declared president on 16 March. President Mauricio Funes on 22 March accused the opposition party of lacking “political maturity”. In a sign that Arena is softening its stance, however, on the same day Quijano told reporters that “whether or not the result is illegal and illegitimate, this does not signify that Arena will [obstruct] governability”.
