TRACKING TRENDS

CHILE | Trade surplus. Chile posted a trade surplus of US$881m in July, compared with US$866.5m in the same month last year. Exports totalled US$4.66bn, down 29% year-on-year; imports fell 33% to US$3.78bn. Exports were at their highest level since October, principally because copper prices were higher in the first three weeks of July than in any comparable period since then. Chile's trade surplus for the first seven months of 2009 was US$6bn, 42% down on the same period last year.
