Region: On 10 October US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel began a six-day, three-nation visit to South America. Hagel first arrived in Colombia where he met Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzón and reaffirmed bilateral ties. The next day he travelled to Chile where he met President Michelle Bachelet, Foreign Minister Heraldo Muñoz and Defense Minister Jorge Burgos and similarly shored up ties. Hagel then travelled to Peru where he attended the 11th Conference of the Defense Ministers of the Americas which took place between 12-14 October in Arequipa. On the side-lines of the conference he met other top officials from the region like the defence ministers of Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras, General Salvador Cienfuegos, David Munguía Payés and Samuel Reyes Rendón respectively.
