A shifting balance of power

Nicolás Maduro campaigned for the presidency on the strength of his anointment by Chávez as his heir in December 2012. That legacy, however, did not include all the votes Chávez had attracted in October 2012 (55% of the total). Maduro only attracted 50.6%, a mere 1.5 percentage points more than his rival, Henrique Capriles of the Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD), who in 2012 had been 11 points behind Chávez.
