CHILE: Candidates enter home straight

There will be five presidential candidates competing in Chile's elections on 13 December after the deadline for registration was passed this week. Only three of these - Sebastián Piñera, of the opposition Coalición por el Cambio, Eduardo Frei of the ruling Concertación, and Marco Enríquez-Ominami, an independent - have any chance of winning, but the two radical left candidates, Jorge Arrate and Senator Alejandro Navarro, could play a decisive role, with their support certain to transfer to either Frei or Enríquez-Ominami against Piñera in a second round in January. Enríquez-Ominami, Arrate and Navarro all left the Concertación earlier this year on the grounds that it had lost touch with the electorate.
