MEXICO: Trying to decipher the new PGR chief

As this issue begins to circulate, the Mexican senate will most probably be voting to ratify the appointment of Arturo Chávez Chávez as the new head of the Procuradurí­a General de la República (PGR) — an outcome which appeared secure after the bloc of the opposition Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) decided, on 22 September, not to object. The new federal attorney-general will be taking office against a backdrop of successes in operations mounted by his predecessor, lingering doubts about the reasons for Eduardo Medina Mora's departure, and uncertainty about future PGR policy.
