President Alvaro Uribe would win 63% of the vote if he is permitted
to stand in next May's elections, according to a survey by the pollster Ipsos.
His rivals would not even muster 20% between them - a sobering thought for
Gustavo Petro and Rafael Pardo, the two men who emerged triumphant from the
party primaries of the Partido Liberal (PL) and Polo Democrático Alternativo
(PDA) on 27 September. Not only were 70% of respondents in agreement with
re-election but half favoured indefinite re-election, and a huge 47% felt Uribe
was the only political leader capable of putting Colombia on the right path.
This means a referendum on re-election would pass comfortably, assuming the
constitutional court raises no objections.End of preview - This article contains approximately 564 words.
