BOLIVIA: Government downplays coca clash

A violent encounter between the indigenous Yuracarés and coca producers (cocaleros) in the indigenous territory and national park, Isiboro Sécure (Tipnis), has exposed the problem of illegal coca cultivation in protected territory, a concern raised in a recent report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (Unodc) [WR-09-26]. With campaigning officially underway ahead of December's elections, the opposition media pounced on the conflict as evidence of divisions within President Evo Morales' traditional support base.
