EL SALVADOR: Arena schism provides boost for Funes

The main right-wing opposition Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) is on the verge of splitting after 12 deputies announced this week that they would no longer adhere to the party line in congress. They said that they would now vote for “the good of the country". The announcement is a major fillip for President Mauricio Funes whose left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí­ para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) lacks the requisite strength in congress to secure support for the 2010 budget [WR-09-40].
