Judges confirmed. On 11 October the constitutional court (CC) confirmed a revised list of 13 supreme court (CSJ) magistrates and 90 appeals court judges for the 2009-2014 period. Congress had initially made the appointments on 30 September. However, the CC subsequently announced it was suspending proceedings in order to hear appeals presented by the UN-backed International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig) and civil society against six of the CSJ appointees and 20 of the candidates put forward as appeals court judges [WR-09-40]. Under considerable international and domestic pressure, congress replaced three of the six CSJ magistrates subject to question. The 20 proposed appeals court judges that had met with objections were also left off the final list.
