PERU-CHILE: War games stoke tension

Chile will carry out its sixth annual military exercise - “Salitre" - in Antofagasta between 19 and 30 October. It will be a multinational air combat training exercise, during which Chilean F-16 fighter pilots will engage fighters from Argentina, Brazil, France and the US. Bolivia will send observers. Peru will not. The Peruvian government objected to the scenario - a hypothetical invasion of Chile by a country from the north in contravention of international treaties. The Chilean air force placated Peru by changing this fictitious scenario after “talks" with the US, but relations remain volatile.
