Uruguay’s automobile industry reeling

Development: On 18 May the Chinese automaker, Chery, revealed that its entire workforce in Uruguay is now on unemployment insurance as production is paralysed.

Significance: Chery took action because of a fall in demand in Brazil, where the economy is faltering and there is no prospect of an imminent recovery. Without a more positive outlook Uruguay’s automobile industry could soon be on borrowed time. President Tabaré Vázquez is heading to Brasília for an official visit on 21 May, and the parlous state of the domestic automobile industry will be high up on a list of priorities during bilateral talks with his Brazilian counterpart, President Dilma Rousseff.
