The foreign minister, Fander Falconí, tendered his resignation this
week after differing sharply with President Rafael Correa over the ambitious
environmental project Yasuní. The government presented the project in mid 2009:
it calls for the international community to stump up some US$3.6bn for Ecuador
to leave oil deposits untapped in the Ishpingo-Tambococha-Tiputini (ITT)
concession in the Yasuní biosphere reserve and national park in Ecuador's
northern Amazon, which is thought to hold 920m barrels of crude
