As we go to press the military high command, led by General Romeo
Vázquez Velásquez, is due to appear before a supreme court judge, who will
decide whether the five men should face charges for the illegal expulsion of
President Manuel Zelaya from Honduras on 28 June last year. The case, presented
by the public prosecutor Luis Rubí, looks like a gesture to the international
community to encourage wider recognition of the president-elect Porfirio Lobo.
The gesture is empty: separately congress this week began discussing the issue
of granting amnesties for all those involved in the events of 28 June, which
