It says much about public interest in the campaign ahead of Costa
Rica's presidential and congressional elections on 7 February that one of the
candidates is actively presenting himself as “the least bad" option. The
candidate for the Partido de Unidad Socialcristiana (Pusc), Luis Fishman,
adopted the slogan in a series of television advertising spots launched this
week. President Oscar Arias hardly offered a ringing endorsement of his party's
candidate, Laura Chinchilla, the clear frontrunner: Arias described the
electoral campaign as “boring" and “lacking music, poetry and
