Haiti devastated by earthquake

A massive earthquake struck Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince this week causing huge loss of life and damage of “catastrophic proportions". At force 7 on the Richter scale, the earthquake was the biggest to strike Haiti in two centuries. It lasted less than a minute but in that time it cruelly reversed any hopes of modest progress glimpsed in recent months, in part through the appointment of former US president Bill Clinton as the UN's special envoy to Haiti [WR-09-21].
