VENEZUELA: Suffused with strife

Two students were killed in protests in the western state of Mérida this week after cable companies dropped the programming of Radio Caracas Televisión Internacional (RCTVI), and five other small cable operators, under threat of losing their licenses. The violent unrest coincided with the decisions of high-profile cabinet ministers, including the Vice-President, to tender their resignations.
