Cabinet reshuffle. Ricardo Patiño is the new minister for foreign affairs. He replaces Fander Falconí, who resigned his position after a serious dispute with President Rafael Correa over the environmental project Yasuní [WR-10-03]. Patiño is Correa's man for all seasons. A former economy minister, he has now served in all of the top cabinet jobs. Until his latest appointment, he was the political coordination minister. Correa said that the defence and foreign affairs portfolios were where it was most essential to have very loyal lieutenants with “great ideological consistency" - and that Patiño met the criteria. He had temporarily entrusted the position to Lautaro Pozo, who had been Falconí's deputy.
