Fernando Gómez Mont, the interior minister, came out strongly this
week against a proposal floated by the former US president Bill Clinton
(1993-2001) that the US and Mexico should model their anti-drugs strategy on the
US 'Plan Colombia'. Gómez Mont is taking an increasingly high profile in
security policymaking, eclipsing Genaro García Luna, nominally the security
minister. Gómez Mont, who resigned from the ruling Partido Acción Nacional (PAN)
in February over the party's decision to go into a series of “Stop the PRI"
alliances in this year's gubernatorial elections, seems to be positioning
