COSTA RICA: Costa Rica's first 'Presidenta' takes office

Pledging to rule with “humility, honesty and firmness" Laura Chinchilla of the ruling centrist Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) was sworn in on 8 May as Costa Rica's first female president. Her first act upon taking office was to issue four decrees illustrating her commitment to her declared priorities of improving security, tackling poverty and keeping Costa Rica 'green'.
