The ruling left-wing Frente Amplio (FA) coalition lost ground in
regional elections on 9 May, held just two months after President José Mujica
took office. The FA retained the regional government of Montevideo (by far the
most important elected office after the presidency) as well as Uruguay's other
two most populous provinces, Canelones and Maldonado - but it did so with
reduced support. The opposition fared better than in the regional elections in
2005 in terms of departments won but its share of the vote was similar. The big
increase in blank and void ballots was a clear message from voters that they are
disillusioned with all of Uruguay's political parties.End of preview - This article contains approximately 666 words.
