ARGENTINA | Richest in region. The Latin Business Chronicle released a report last week claiming that Argentina had surpassed Chile as the richest country in Latin America in 2009, in accordance with GDP per capita purchasing power parity (PPP). The report analyses data from the IMF showing GDP per capita of US$14,561 in Argentina last year, up by 1.1% on 2008, compared with US$14,341 in Chile, down by 1.7%. Mexico was third with per capita GDP in PPP down steeply by 6.2% to US$13,628. The one caveat, cited in the report, was that the IMF data used statistics released by Argentina's nominally autonomous national statistics institute (Indec), which has been accused of manipulating figures ever since the government overtly intervened with the running of the institute over three years ago.
