MEXICO: Yucatán prepares for elections

The state of Yucatán goes to the polls to elect mayors and state deputies on 16 May. Yucatán is only one of three states in which there have been no drug-gang killings this year. The election campaign, however, has been vicious. One unusual aspect of its elections is that women will end up holding the top jobs. The state already has a female governor, and two women are competing for the next most important job in the state, mayor of the state capital, Mérida.
