Rewards offered to thwart Farc electoral attack

The authorities this week announced a reward of Col$100m (US$49,000) for information that could help to foil a potential attack by the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) in the run-up to presidential elections on 30 May. The head of the national police, General Oscar Naranjo, claims the Farc has a plan to destabilise the electoral process, although it was surprisingly quiet when legislative elections were held on 14 March. The defence minister, Gabriel Silva, said Farc guerrillas planned to disguise themselves as police and soldiers to carry out attacks, and that intelligence had been received pointing to a planned Farc assault on the local population in the southern departments of Caquetá and Huila, where the Farc presence is strong. Some 350,000 members of the armed forces and police will be deployed on election day to “guarantee calm".
