The federal Procuraduría General de la República arrested Gregorio
“Greg" Sánchez Martínez, the left-wing candidate for the governorship of
Quintana Roo, on 25 May. This is the first time a candidate for a senior
position has been arrested during an election campaign. Sánchez, who was
narrowly elected mayor of Cancún in 2008, is standing for the 'Mega Alianza
Todos por Quintana Roo'. This is backed by the Partido de la Revolución
Democrática (PRD); the Partido del Trabajo and Convergencia. He is accused
of having links to the Beltrán Leyva gang (a faction of the Sinaloa gang) and
Los Zetas. End of preview - This article contains approximately 535 words.
