Antanas Mockus surged up the polls to overhaul Juan Manuel Santos,
the main Uribista candidate, in the presidential race, but with days to go
before the first round on 30 May, the former mayor of Bogotá is already looking
ahead to a run-off against Santos on 20 June. There are clear signs that Mockus
is concerned that far from pulling away from Santos he has reached a plateau and
the gap is in fact closing. He is also aware that the urban bias of the polls
might be overstating his support as Santos enjoys strong rural backing. All this
led Mockus to make the highly risky move of reaching out to the leader of the
left-wing Polo Democrático Alternativo (PDA), Gustavo Petro, as a potential ally
in the second round. End of preview - This article contains approximately 1431 words.
