Juan Manuel Santos will be inaugurated as president of Colombia on 7
August. Santos, the self-professed heir to President Alvaro Uribe, cantered home
in the second round of presidential elections on 20 June ahead of Antanas
Mockus, the maverick leader of the fledgling Partido Verde (PV). During his
victory speech, Santos reiterated his determination to forge a government of
national “unity" - a word that cropped up time and time again. So many parties
are clamouring to jump aboard his coalition he will enjoy an even more
comfortable majority in both chambers of congress than Uribe. He has plenty of
room to manoeuvre but faces a tough balancing act keeping a disparate coalition
together as each of these parties will expect a cabinet presence or top jobs in
