COLOMBIA | FTA with Canada. Canada's senate approved a Free Trade Agreement with Colombia this week, which will now be signed into law by the Governor General Michaelle Jean. The bill had been mired in parliament for two years over concerns about labour rights and human rights violations, much as in the US. Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe will be hopeful that the approval of the FTA, which he described as “a very good achievement", will encourage the US Congress to follow suit shortly. The FTA is likely to lead to increased Canadian investment in Colombia's mining and oil sectors. Two-way trade amounted to US$1.26bn in 2008.
