The UN Special Rapporteur for indigenous rights, James Anaya, visited
Guatemala last week to investigate complaints that the government of President
Alvaro Colom had illegally granted mining concessions on indigenous lands to
foreign companies without their consent. Anaya's trip, which follows other
international pressure on the government in relation to indigenous rights, is
the latest reminder of how despite his 2007 electoral campaign pledge to
establish “social democracy with a Mayan face", Colom has failed in practice to
