Six member states of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS)
signed an agreement in Castries, St Lucia, on 18 June creating an Economic
Union. The leaders of Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and
Nevis, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines marked the 29th anniversary of
the signature of the founding treaty of the OECS by opting for “a single
economic and financial space" to deepen the integration of the sub-region. The
British dependency of Montserrat is expected to join the Economic Union within
the next few weeks, followed by Anguilla and the British Virgin islands, which
are associate members of the OECS.
