MEXICO | Killings become political. A mayor in Oaxaca, another in Chihuahua, and the father of a mayor in Veracruz were all killed in shootouts on 19 June. In addition to these attacks, petrol bombs were thrown at political party offices in Sinaloa. So far this year, 5,299 people have been killed by gangsters: in the whole of 2009, 6,587 were killed. In 2008 the death toll was 5,208.
