MEXICO | Vehicle tax. President Felipe Calderón decreed the abolition of the tax on vehicle ownership on 24 June. Greenpeace, an environmental activist group, claimed that the upshot of Calderón's move would be a significant increase in Mexico's greenhouse gas emissions. It also estimated that the move would push up the number of cars in Mexico from the current 20m to 30m in 2020. Calderón argued that the decree was designed to help the car industry, which is performing well on the export front but struggling much more in the domestic market.
