MEXICO | Vehicle tax. President Felipe Calderón decreed the
abolition of the tax on vehicle ownership on 24 June. Greenpeace, an
environmental activist group, claimed that the upshot of Calderón's move would
be a significant increase in Mexico's greenhouse gas emissions. It also
estimated that the move would push up the number of cars in Mexico from the
current 20m to 30m in 2020. Calderón argued that the decree was designed to help
the car industry, which is performing well on the export front but struggling
much more in the domestic market.
