CENTRAL AMERICA & CARIBBEAN: Caricom wrestles to justify its relevance

Leaders of the 15-member Caribbean Community (Caricom) met in Montego Bay, Jamaica, between 4 and 7 July against a backdrop of mounting criticism of Caricom as a failed integration movement. The Jamaica Gleaner produced a searing editorial branding Caricom an unmitigated failure and calling on leaders to have the honesty either to accept it as such and dissolve the union or make a concerted effort to look beyond myopic self-interest and shake-up the regional entity. The fact that just seven of the 15 leaders bothered to turn up for the summit was a telling indictment, but those who did come spoke candidly about the need for a fundamental structural overhaul of Caricom to justify its continuance.
