Leaders of the 15-member Caribbean Community (Caricom) met in Montego
Bay, Jamaica, between 4 and 7 July against a backdrop of mounting criticism of
Caricom as a failed integration movement. The Jamaica Gleaner produced
a searing editorial branding Caricom an unmitigated failure and calling on
leaders to have the honesty either to accept it as such and dissolve the union
or make a concerted effort to look beyond myopic self-interest and shake-up the
regional entity. The fact that just seven of the 15 leaders bothered to turn up
for the summit was a telling indictment, but those who did come spoke candidly
about the need for a fundamental structural overhaul of Caricom to justify its
continuance.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1329 words.
