CHILE: The politics of sex and marriage

Chileans who reach their golden wedding anniversary between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2013 will be rewarded with a Ch$250,000 (US$465) cash bonus. While passing a decree to this effect last week, President Sebastián Piñera said he was motivated by “a genuine gesture of gratitude, an act of justice and love", rather than populism. He was also making a clear gesture to his ultra-conservative coalition partner, Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI): some of the UDI's senior politicians have openly criticised Piñera for acting like a fifth president of the left-wing opposition Concertación and are particularly perturbed by his recent liberal gestures to homosexuals for fear of undermining traditional marriage values.
