Argentina: On 4 August US Secretary of State John Kerry and Argentina’s foreign minister, Susana Malcorra, launched a High-Level Dialogue (HLD) in Buenos Aires aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. A US State Department press release issued the same day notes that the two agreed that the HLD will “aim to deliver tangible results in expanding ties, fostering shared prosperity, and promoting bilateral cooperation on inclusive economic development, trade and investment, labor, tourism, and educational exchanges”. The statement notes that the HLD will also address “common global and regional challenges in areas such as democracy and human rights, peacekeeping, security cooperation, non-proliferation, the environment, climate change, and clean energy”. The meeting is in line with the bilateral agenda established when President Mauricio Macri hosted a landmark visit by US President Barack Obama to Argentina on 23-24 March. Kerry and Malcorra agreed their teams would hold additional discussions under the rubric of the HLD later this year, with annual meetings thereafter.
